Creativity, United.

It takes a creative community – copywriters, art directors, designers, photographers, illustrators, account planners and other creators – all working together to create a Pele-worthy piece of advertising. We motivate each other, teach each other, inspire each other. And when we unite our talents, ideas take shape, sparks of ingenuity fly and creativity is forged. We are all members of one tribe, united in our pursuit to create what has never been created before.

The Pele Gold winners in all national categories are sent to the National Finals of the American Advertising Awards Competition to represent District 13. It’s designed to recognize excellence in advertising and design in the State of Hawaii for the past calendar year.

Dave Hanneken

Partner, Executive Creative Director, Adjunct Professor

Hoffman York, Milwaukee Marquette University

Bio

Before becoming the Executive Creative Director at Hoffman York, Dave worked first as a copywriter, then later as a creative director on many national and international accounts for companies like Ogilvy & Mather and Cramer-Krasselt. During that time, he worked on Fortune 500 brands like Miller Brewing, Kleenex, SCJohnson Wax, UPS, Dove, American Express, and many more.

Over his 25+ years in the business, Dave’s journey took him into the entrepreneur world as a partner in his own agency – the highly acclaimed Kohnke Hanneken. Wherever he goes, accolades tend to follow, like gold One Show pencils, Clio statues, Cannes Lions, Effie awards, and even a profile in Communication Arts Magazine.

Dave has given keynote presentations at numerous marketing conferences in the US and Canada, and has somehow found time to publish a novel of historical fiction titled, “The Home Front.” He also teaches advertising classes at Marquette University, winning the College of Communication’s “Adjunct Teacher of the Year Award” after only his first year in the classroom.

While growing up, Dave gorged himself on a steady diet of work by the masters: Kurt Vonnegut, John Updike, Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain and anybody else associated with Mad Magazine. (Hence, some ads he writes can be folded in half to form a witty and subversive message.)

Kris Hanson

Creative Boss

Kris Hanson Design, Northern California

Bio

I’ve been at this design/advertising/messaging thing for a little over 30 years.

I spent my first decade as an art director in retail environments (Macy’s, Esprit, Target, Cellular One) both B2B and B2C.

Following that, I spent over 18 years with Ogilvy as Creative Director/SVP for the west coast offices.

At Ogilvy, my sweet spot was crafting solutions for a broad range of social change programs and statewide initiatives designed to reach California’s diverse populations with a particular focus on Healthcare Access, Marriage Equality, Elder Abuse Prevention, Teacher Recruitment, Repealing the Death Penalty, Teen Pregnancy Prevention, Traffic Safety, Protecting Women’s Right to Choice, Recycling, Community College Access & Affordability.

I hung my Kris Hanson Design shingle about 5 years ago.

Currently, I am retired-”ish” and keeping busy with pro-bono design/consulting, photography, and fine art “experiments.”

It has been my honor to participate as a judge in over 20 AAF professional & student competitions. I encourage everyone to volunteer and participate!
